Fried Podi Idli

My one among all time favorite finger food is Fried Podi Idli. Purposely I use to prepare some extra Idli and use the leftover to make this yummy spicy delight. This serve as a perfect  evening tiffin with coffee/tea. Whenever we go to any Indian Restaurant for dinner my daughter loves to have mini Idlies so I bought mini Idli making moulds from supermarket to satisfy her by making at home. This dish I prepared with leftover mini Idli. You can simply make with normal Idli, cut into small cubes and fry along with onion, Idli chilli powder along with aromatic curry leaves touch. This can be made as quick as in 5 minutes if you are ready with Idli.

Fried Podi Idli
YIELD –2 Servings

Leftover Mini Idli - 20 Idli or Normal Idli- 4-5no.
Onion - 1 Large finely chopped
Turmeric Powder-1/2 tsp
Green Chilli-1-2 finely chopped
Curry leaves- 1 spring
Salt To Taste
Oil to Fry

For Seasoning:
Oil- 2tbsp
Hing-1 tsp
Mustard Seeds-1 tsp
Cumin Seeds- 1 tsp
Split Urad Dhal- 1 tsp

  1. Heat oil in a wok, add seasoning and let it splutter.
  2. Add curry leaves and fry till crisp.
  3. Add in chopped onion and saute till transparent. Add green chilli.
  4. Add the Idli chilli powder, turmeric powder and stir for few seconds.
  5. Combine the leftover Idli and stir well to mix.
  6. Check for the salt and add only if required because already salt will be available in chilli powder.
  7. Cook till Idli turns slight golden crisp and blends well with all ingredients.
  8. Dish out and serve with chilled Raita.
  9. Serve hot immediately to enjoy the crispy texture and flavor.

If you does not have Idli Chilli Powder in Stock include more Freshly chopped green chilli typical Upma style.
If you want idli to be more crisp slightly toast idli in fry with little oil before adding to sauted onion podi mix.
