Javvarisi Payasam / Sago Kheer

Aadi Maasam special recipe Javvarisi payasam. Adai(tamil month) is a fourth month in tamil calendar(midst of july- august) is a popular month among tamilian where married women use to take fasting on all  fridays for this whole month. Especially the 18th day of this month is celebrated as Aadi Perukku. Just like earth gives us food to survive, same way water is considered as sacred necessity  to meet the needs of individuals. On this day women pay their tribute to water sources with a floating lamp especially on river, well. We dedicate this sweet recipe for this aadi perukku being on August 2, 2012.

Javvarisi is also known as Sago/Sabodana/Tapioca pearls/Sabubiyyam. It is always a favourite ingredient during fasting period and when added to the desserts it taste really great. This Javvarisi payasam specially cooked in milk will definitely be a treat for the taste buds.

Javvarisi payasam / Sago Kheer



Sago - 1/4 cup
Milk - 3 cups
Sugar - 1/2 cup
Cashews - 10
Raisins - 10
Ghee - 2 tbsp.


  1. Soak sago in water for about 5 hours. Discard the soaked water.
  2. Heat a tbsp. of ghee in a pan. Roast the Cashews.
  3. Boil milk in a heavy bottomed pan.
  4. Add the Sago to this, cook until the sago turns transparent and cooked well.
  5. Keep on stirring to ensure it doesn't burn at the bottom.
  6. Add sugar, simmer until the sugar combines well and the payasam thickens to the required consistency
  7. Garnish with fried Cashews and Raisins


  • You can also add Jaggery instead of sugar to make a healthier version.
  • Do not overcook sago since it will loose its shape.
  • You can also add 1/2 cup of water to ensure that the payasam doesn't thicken so quickly.
