Shojhi it is combination of rice and moong dhal recipes. The wholesome healthy steamed rice with mild spice of red chilli. This is one of the traditional recipe in our home which is usually prepared for breakfast. This is easiest and simplest one pot dish with good source of protein, carbohydrate steam cooked food. This is always been accompanied with Tenkai Ooripindi/Thengai Thogayal/coconut chutney.


YIELD – 2 servings


Raw Rice - 3/4cup
Split Yellow Moong Dhal(paasi paruppu)-1/4 cup
Water -4cups
Salt To Taste
Grated Coconut -3tbsp
Turmeric Powder a pinch

For Seasoning:
Broken red chilli-4-5no.
Curry leaves-1stack
Split urad dhal-1tsp
Cumin Seeds-1tsp
Bengal gram dhal-1tsp


  1. Heat a deep bottomed pan, dry roast the rice till crisp but do not turn brown. Transfer to the plate and keep aside.
  2. Similar way dry roast  dhal and keep aside.
  3. In the same pan heat oil add mustard, asefoetida, broken red chilli,cumin seeds, split urad dhal, bengal dhal and curry leaves.
  4. Pour in the water, salt and bring it  to boil.
  5. Add the roasted rice and dhal. Cook covered over medium slow flame for 20minutes.
  6. Finally add the freshly grated coconut and combine well to mix. Give a 5minutes standby time.
  7. Serve with coconut Lentil chutney(click here for recipe).


If you want can pressure cook directly all together in a vessels for 3 sounds over medium flame by following same procedure. Wait for pressure to release, open the cooker,stir once and give a standby time for 5minutes to set and serve hot.
