Kalkandu Saadham / Rock Sugar Rice ~ Navratri Special Recipe

One of the best neivedhyam for Navarathri would be this easy to make sweet rice. Any festival will always be complete with a sweet and this is one such sweet that can be made very easily. rice is cooked with milk and water first and then this rock sugar is added to add sweetness to it. This is also placed in variety rice category in South India for functions served for pregnant ladies. Lets see how it is made.

Karkandu Saadham



Ponni Raw Rice - 1 cup
Rock Sugar crushed - 1 cup
Milk - 1 1/2 cups
Ghee - 3 tbsp.
Cashews - 1 tbsp.


  1. Heat a pan with little ghee and roast the cashews and keep aside. 
  2. Wash and rinse the rice well.
  3. Boil milk and required water together in another pan.
  4. Add the rice and cook until it is cooked well and the texture is not grainy.
  5. Put off the stove.
  6. Add the crushed raw sugar to this and mix well.
  7. Add the ghee and combine it well with the rice.
  8. Garnish it with the roasted cashews.
  9. Serve hot as a Neivedhiyam


  • You can also add dates to garnish.
