Mushroom Masala | Quick And Easy To Make Mushroom Gravy ( Side Dish For Roti | Naan)

Mushrooms are cooked in the spicy onion based gravy with coconut cashew flavour.

Mushrooms are edible fungi, known as "Agaricus". It is suitable to make soup, starters, curry and more. The easy, tasty mushroom masala is perfect to go with hot roti. It's made with cubed mushrooms, simmer cooked in onion based gravy. To enhance the flavour and thicken of the gravy, here I used some coconut cashew paste. It gave nice twist to the entire gravy and we all enjoy the taste. Its a complete vegan food to enjoy with fresh rice.

Preparation & Cooking Time : 20 Minutes

YIELD : 2 Servings


Button Mushroom - 1  Punnet(Swiss White/Brown)
Onion - 1 Large or 2 Medium, sliced
Ginger Garlic  Paste - 1tsp
Red Chilli Powder -1 tsp
Garam Masala Powder - 1/2 tsp
Dry Coconut (grated) - 1 tbsp
Cashewnuts - 5 no
Juice Of 1 Lemon(adjust as per sour)
Salt To Taste
Oil - 1 tbsp
Coriander Leaves Few Chopped, For Garnish


  1. Heat a tsp of oil in a fry pan, saute the sliced onion and grind to smooth paste.
  2. Meanwhile wash, trim and slice the mushrooms, boil for 2 minutes in a salted water. Drain and keep aside. Blend coconut and cashew to smooth paste with little water.
  3. Now add a tbsp of oil in a wok, throw in the onion paste and saute. Stir in the ginger garlic paste and saute until raw smell vanish.
  4. Throw in the chilli powder, garam masala and salt. Mix Well. 
  5. Now add the boiled mushroom and ground coconut cashew paste. Pour 1/4 cup water. Bring to boil and simmer gently for 5 minutes. 
  6. Squeeze the lemon juice and garnish with coriander.
  7. Serve with Pulao or Roti.


For variation, use chopped tomato / tomato puree after onion saute for tangy effect. Avoid Lemon juice at this point.
You can combine the curry with fresh / frozen green peas to make even more tasty curry.
