Chapati Upma - Tricky Leftovers | Ezcookbook

Chappati Upma is a quick fix recipe to make use of leftover roti / chapati. An excellent idea to turn your roti into upma for an appealing evening tiffin. I would even recommend bachelors to give a try for this upma, as it takes hardly 15 minutes to prepare.
Two weeks back MH got back Lunch box as I sent, because of team lunch out. I generally hate wasting the food, but some times no choice. In such situation, I reuse it with possible ways to make a new dish.
So what I did is chopped the chappati into thin slices, then sauteed with some veggie, chilli  with hint of coconut. I made it in a very simple way and  create your own style to make it more interesting. Check all our recipes using tricky leftovers.

Preparation & Cooking Time : 15 minutes

YIELD : Serves 2


Leftover Roti / Chapati - 4
Onion - 1 medium size, finely chopped
Frozen /Fresh Green Peas - 2 tbsp, defrost before use
Carrot - 1/4 cup, thin Julinned
Garam Masala - 1tsp
Green Chilli - 1,chopped
Grated Coconut - 1 tbsp
Garam Masala - 1tsp
Curry Leaves - 1 spring
Oil- 1tbsp
Curd to serve, as needed


  1. Chop the roti / chapati into thin strips. To make thin strips, roll the roti and divide into 3-4 strips and chop to thin strips. Keep aside.
  2. Heat a pan with oil. Add mustard, wait to splutter. Now stir in chopped green chilli and curry leaves.
  3. Add some carrot and peas, saute for 2 minutes to cook. Combine the roti strips and mix well. Add salt only if needed.
  4. Sprinkle some water and cook covered for 2-3 minutes.
  5. Dash in some garam masala and mix well. Garnish with grated coconut. Turn of stove.
  6. Serve hot with cup of fresh curd.


  • Taste the upma before adding salt, as already salt is in chappati.
  • Sprinkling the water makes the dry chappati to turn soft.
  • Adding vegetables gives appealing look and add some nutrients too.
  • For variation try with spicy scrambled eggs added to upma at the end. It makes more filling meal too.
