Sakkarai Pongal / Sweet Pongal

Delicious sweet rice made with a combination of rice, dhal and jaggery .

Sarkkarai pongal, a very famous sweet recipe made of  rice, dhal and jaggery combination. The most famous neivedhyam prepared in almost all temples in southern part of India. Whenever there is a religious festival this is made at all south Indian homes. 
As pongal festival (tamilar thirunal) is ahead, people from tamil nadu prepares this special dish using earthens pot and offer to god (suriya bhagavaan ), earth and their cattles to pay their thanks for bountiful harvest.  Probably  can say Indian Thanks Giving day.

The harvested rice and lentil  is been used to prepare many  special dishes like Paal Pongal, Ven Pongal, Sakkarai Pongal, Kalkandu Pongal, Akkaravadisal,  Paal Payasam, Paruppu Payasam. This harvest festival is celebrated in almost all part of India with their own special ways. Make this Sakkarai Pongal easily following the recipe procedure and celebrate this Pongal festival the most happiest way.

Preparation Time & Cooking Time: 30 Minutes



Raw rice - 1 cup
Split green gram dhal / Paasi paruppu - 1/4 cup
Jaggery - 350 grams
Ghee - 5 tsp.
Cashew - 5-6no.
Raisins - 5-6no.
Dried grapes - 10
Fresh Coconut Grated - 3 tbsp
A pinch of Edible Camphor


  1. Crush jaggery roughly. Put it in a vessel. Add water to 3/4th of its level. Heat it and make a thick syrup. Pass through the strainer to remove impurities/dust in it.
  2. Fry cashews, raisins  in a little ghee. Keep it aside.
  3. In a pressure cooker, cook rice and dhal together with 3 cups of water to a semisolid consistency. Put off stove.
  4. Add the jaggery syrup, remaining ghee, raisins, cashews grated coconut and cashews. Give a standby time to enhance flavours.
  5. Dish out and Serve hot. (Don't forget to offer this Prasadham to god before you eat)


  • The pongal can be prepared using milk in place of water to taste great and rich delicious.
  • If people want to try with out jaggery, proceed with sugar in such case the will have white base texture.
  • Adding cardamon, edible camphor is optional. 
  • Increase the dhal quantity, if you wish to have dominating taste of dhal.
